Reddit Recommended VPN Services

A list of VPN services recommended by Redditors.

  • Proton VPN — strongest overall Reddit alternative: privacy-focused, open-source apps, good speeds, streaming, Linux support, and port forwarding on paid plans.

  • IVPN — probably the closest philosophical alternative to Mullvad. Strong privacy reputation, good Linux support, minimal-data approach. Smaller server network and less streaming-focused.

  • Windscribe — commonly recommended for price, features, split tunneling, advanced DNS, and avoiding some VPN blocks. Privacy reputation is generally good, though opinions on reliability vary.

  • AirVPN — niche favorite, particularly for torrenting and technical users. Supports port forwarding, but its network and speeds tend to lag Proton.

  • NymVPN — increasingly mentioned by privacy-minded Redditors, but still newer and less proven; occasional client quirks are reported.

  • NordVPN — recommended more for speed and streaming than maximum privacy. Reddit opinion is notably polarized around its marketing, ownership, and pricing practices.

  • Private Internet Access (PIA) — still has users who describe it as reliable and fast, but it doesn't get the same privacy-community enthusiasm as Proton or IVPN.

For privacy first: IVPN → Proton. For torrenting: Proton → AirVPN. For features/value: Windscribe.

One caution: VPN-related Reddit discussion has substantial affiliate and promotional activity, so recurring recommendations across privacy-focused communities are generally more useful than isolated “best VPN” posts.
